Knowingly or not knowingly, we waste water every day.
Every single day in the UK, over 3 billion litres of perfectly good clean water is being wasted. That's enough to fill 1,200 Olympic-sized swimming pools. It's estimated that this equates to roughly 25% of the UK's daily water consumption.
Every person uses approximately 150 litres of water a day, a figure that has been growing every year by 1% since 1930. If you take into account the water that is needed to produce the food and products you consume in your day-to-day life (known as embedded water) you actually consume 3,400 litres per day.
By making small behavioural changes and choosing more water-efficient products, you can save water without sacrificing too much money, comfort, or level of service. Water efficiency is about reducing the amount of water you waste on a daily basis, not restricting what you use.
Think about how much water is necessary for a specific purpose or task
Consider how you can help minimize the impact of water use on local water supplies. Ask yourself what you can do to eliminate wasteful practices and use only what you need.
No matter what you’re doing, try to always ask yourself if you need that much water, or if you can save excess water - from washing your vegetables or your hands to watering your houseplants (and don’t forget to also pop a ShowerBoB kitchen tap regulator to your tap to reduce water flow by up to 70%).
Understanding what you can do to save water is where it all begins
You can achieve significant water savings in your home by installing ShowerBoB products and fixing leaks. Using less water leaves more of it in the ground or in our streams, rivers, and lakes, which benefits our environment and the wildlife living in and around it. Do what you can to avoid unnecessary water use and you will be contributing to the long-term quality, adequate future water supply and sustainability of your community!
