Some, including the River Wye and River Ouse, are at their lowest ever recorded.

Whilst water companies are under pressure to fix leaks, each of us can help reduce demand on our fragile water supply. Even small, everyday actions can protect the environment and ease pressure on resources – from skipping the garden sprinkler to the slightly unusual (but surprisingly effective) act of deleting old emails.

Here’s our refreshed list of water-saving tips for home and garden this summer:

1. Keep the sprinklers off
Garden sprinklers can use up to 1,000 litres of water an hour – more than 12 baths. Instead, use a water butt to collect free rainwater from your downpipes (home, shed, garage, greenhouse). Slimline butts are available for smaller spaces.

2. Use a watering can instead of a hose
A watering can helps you target exactly where water is needed. If you must use a hose, add a trigger nozzle to halve water use and control the flow. Water less often but more deeply to encourage strong root growth – once every 10 days is enough for most plants.

3. Water early in the morning
Watering before the day heats up reduces evaporation, getting more moisture to the roots where plants need it most, and gives the plants time to absorb the water so they can get through the long, hot day ahead.

4. Mulch your beds
Bark chippings, straw or shredded prunings help lock in soil moisture, cutting evaporation by up to 75%. Mulching also suppresses weeds and helps protect plants from temperature swings.

5. Stop running taps
Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth, washing vegetables or scrubbing dishes. Use a bowl for washing up, starting with the cleanest items first to make the water go further. Our Universal Sink Plug is a handy addition when you’re on the move, staying away from home, or have lost your plug – helping you save water wherever you are.

6. Reuse water around the home
Save cooking water (once cooled) and fruit/veg rinse water for your plants – they’ll benefit from extra nutrients. “Grey water” from baths or showers can also be used for non-edible plants.

7. Switch to shorter showers
Showers use less water than baths – but keep them brief. Aim for four minutes or less, and remember that every extra minute saved is a win. A ShowerBoB 4-minute shower timer or AQOS Digital Shower Meter can help you track and cut your shower time, reducing both water and energy bills.

8. Fit low-flow aerators on taps and showers
Aerators mix air into the water flow, maintaining the same pressure while using less water. Our integral tap regulators are available for basins, kitchen taps and shower heads, and are quick to fit and inexpensive. The savings are almost invisible to the user – but make a big difference over time.

9. Keep a jug of cold water in the fridge
Avoid running the tap until it turns cold – store chilled water in the fridge for instant refreshment.

10. Delete old emails (yes, really!)
Every email stored in your inbox is saved on a server in an energy-hungry data centre. These facilities need huge amounts of water for cooling. By deleting unnecessary emails, you’re helping reduce energy demand and the water used to cool servers. It’s a small act with a surprisingly wide impact. As data centres often run on electricity generated from finite resources, you’ll also be helping reduce carbon emissions – and if you pay for extra storage through email providers, you might even save money on subscription costs.

We can all do our bit to safeguard our freshwater supplies. Small, consistent changes – multiplied by millions of households – make a real difference. Share these tips with friends, neighbours and colleagues, and help build a culture of everyday water-saving.

At ShowerBoB, our mission is simple: to make saving water and energy easy. From tap aerators to shower meters, our products are designed to help you reduce usage, cut bills and protect the environment.

Let’s take the next step together towards a greener, more water-secure future.

ShowerBoB | Consumer shop

Photo by Sandy Millar on Unsplash

Become a Water Saving Hero this Water Saving Week!

https://www.showerbob.co.uk/news/become-a-water-saving-hero-this-water-saving-week

https://www.showerbob.co.uk/news/become-a-water-saving-hero-this-water-saving-week#comments

Uncategorized

Water is making headlines again – with household bills rising and climate pressures mounting, saving water is more important than ever. This week is Water Saving Week 2025, and we’re proud to support Waterwise in their mission to help everyone become a Water Saving Hero! 🌦️ Why now? When you’re brushing your teeth or shaving for example. If you’ve got a family, that’s a great opportunity to save and you can do this by simply reducing the time you spend in the shower. The average person can take around 8 minutes in the shower, so think about how much water you’d save if you reduced this to 4? Keep the sprinklers off
Watering your garden can be a big source of water, but there are ways to minimise it. Instead of using sprinklers, which can use up to 1,000 litres of water an hour (that's more than 12 baths!), invest in a water butt to collect free rainwater. Attach them to each rainwater downpipe on your home, shed, garage or greenhouse, using slimline butts when space is limited.

2. Use a watering can instead of a hose
You can get exactly the right amount of water to your plants and pots with a watering can, but if you are using a hose, attach a trigger nozzle to halve the amount of water used and help control the flow. You can also encourage your plants to develop deep root systems by watering them less frequently. According to Gardeners' World, a good soak once every 10 days is enough for most plants.

3. Water early in the morning
Try watering your garden earlier in the day before the sun gets too hot. When the sun is high, water evaporates and can't reach the all-important roots - wasting precious water and your time too.

4. Mulch your beds
Use bark chippings, straw or shredded prunings around permanent plants to prevent evaporation by about 75%, saving you water and time with less watering needed. It will also prevent weeds growing and protect against slugs, so it's an all-round winner!

5. Stop running taps
Taps can waste a lot of water, so turn off the tap when you're washing vegetables or brushing your teeth. When doing the dishes, fill up a bowl with water instead of letting the tap run. Clean the cleanest items first and you'll save a huge amount of water in comparison to washing everything under the tap.

6. Use leftover water from your home
Don't let that cooking water go to waste! You can left over cooking water or water from rinsing your fruit and veg to water your plants. It even gives them extra nutrients. You can use the 'grey water' from your baths, showers and washing up bowls too, rather than fresh water from the tap - but don't use it to water fruit or vegetables.

7. Fix leaky taps
A simple drip from a leaky tap can waste a surprising amount of water. Check for leaks under the sink or for any drips when the tap is fully off - including your garden taps.

8. Switch to showers
If you're still taking baths, it's time to switch to showers. Showers use less water than baths, but be mindful of the length of your shower. Try to keep it to four minutes or less. Using ShowerBoB's AQOS Digital Shower Meter will help you to do just that and will also help you to save money on your water and energy bills too.

9. Fit low flow aerators on your taps and showers
Using adaptors to aerate your water supply means you get the same water pressure but use less water. Aerators and regulators are easy to fit and create invisible water saving. The water is filled with soft tiny bubbles, so the flow feels just as strong. Try the ShowerBoB Kitchen Tap Regulator, or Curve Eco Shower Head for low-cost water-saving.

10. Fill up a jug of cold water
Running the tap until the water gets cold might seem like a trivial thing, but it all adds up over time. Make a habit of filling up a jug of water and putting it in the fridge each day so you always have cold water available without running the tap.

We can all do our bit to help preserve our freshwater sources by reducing our household water footprint. Water that has been absorbed deep into the ground can be accessed via wells and boreholes. It is often relatively clean and very rich in minerals, which makes it ideal if you need water for irrigation or watering your garden.

Flowing or surface water
Water found in streams, rivers and lakes with underwater currents should be reasonably clean, although no doubt you'll have read about the increase in raw sewage discharge in the national news recently. The fact that the water in these sources is constantly flowing or moving should prevents pollutants from building up, but it's vital that our water companies are held to account to improve their performance and tackle the problem of sewage spills. Since surface water is more easily accessible than groundwater, it is relied on for many human uses. It is an important source of drinking water and is used for the irrigation of farmland.

Standing water
The term ‘standing water’ refers to any body of water that isn’t flowing, in motion nor sinks into the ground. If standing water, is unable to flow or drain away properly it will become stagnant polluted and unhealthy over time, for instance in ponds, puddles or on flat roofs.

Rainwater
Rainwater is significantly cleaner than standing water but may be dirtier than flowing water or properly collected groundwater. Rainwater is classed as non-potable or non-drinking water by UK water regulations. This means it cannot be used for applications where there is human contact (such as drinking, bathing and cooking). Once filtered, however, it can be used for a number of different purposes. A water butt for your garden is a great way to collect rainwater to water your plants during warmer months instead of relying on water from your taps.

This blog covers four basic types of water that are critical to our survival. It is just the basics, but enough information to help us understand where we need to conserve and where we need to access more water in our battle for water conservation. We are not making any new water and won’t be for the foreseeable future. The key is to look after and get more out of the water we already have; the water we have had all of our lives.

At ShowerBoB, we care passionately about the environment. It’s why we designed our water and energy saving products to help people to take a step to reduce the water and energy that they use in the bathroom.

ShowerBoB | Consumer shop

Photo by Anderson Rian on Unsplash
