22 March: World Water Day

1/3/2023

22nd March 2023 is the 30th World Water Day. The United Nations Assembly created the observation day in 1993 to celebrate fresh water and highlight the global water crisis. Find out more and how you can be the change.

There are 2.2 billion people worldwide living without access to safe and drinkable water. The United Nations has set a goal that by 2030, all people would have access to safe water and sanitation.

World Water Day seeks to educate people about how water usage effects climate change. From the use of water itself, to the energy used in heating it.

For those with regular access to water, the campaign aims to show how reducing individual use can help to reduce droughts, pollution and protect the environment. Plus by doing simple things like reducing shower times or heating less water, you save energy, which helps fight climate change.

So how can you be the change?
There are lots of ways to get involved in World Water Day, here are just a few simple suggestions...

  1. Tell people and raise awareness by posting on social media: Many people don’t realise that water is  infinite and by using less in the western world, we can support less developed countries. #WorldWaterDay #WaterActions
  2. Visit a local farm shop or food market for locally produced meat and vegetables: Importing and transporting produce uses water in the process.
  3. Reduce your shower time: Why not get your family to take part in ShowerBoB’s 4-minute shower challenge? This will also save energy and money!
  4. Collect rainwater: Use a water butt to reuse it to water your garden.
  5. Watch a documentary about water or the environment with your family: Check out some of the enlightening and inspiring titles on Earth.org
  6. Fundraise for a charity specialising in water sanitation: Such as Water Aid
  7. Create a water diary to help you understand how much daily water you use: Everyday things like cooking, making a cup of tea, brushing your teeth, flushing the toilet, washing up and washing clothes use more than you think. You can then use this diary to see how you can reduce your personal usage.

Water affects us all, and we all need to take action. Whatever you choose to do, good luck from all of us at ShowerBoB!
