We are delighted to hear reports from The University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN), who recently reported that they "conservatively estimate students and staff have pledged to to use ShowerBoB saving 5,426,820 litres of water in one year".
Results are so impressive that UCLAN are rolling out ShowerBoB shower timers to all facilities in their halls of residence from the start of the next academic year, 2011/12.
Last year UCLAN circulated over 800 ShowerBoB shower timers, largely via their Fresher's Fair. Whilst savings, both financial and carbon emissions are difficult to estimate without detailed data, they have saved at least £13,800 and 59,400 kgCO2.
Sarah Buckland, Environment and Sustainability Manager, UCLAN, told us:
"In the Sustainable Development sphere there is always a dilemma about handing out freebies, is it just generating waste? We've found shower timers to be an incredibly thought provoking engagement tool with our staff and students alike. Most people want to do something to reduce their environmental impact and these timers are an easy way for a whole household to make a difference and save money!" Posted on 18 Jul 2011
